Hornbeam Tree
From the Betulaceae family (same as Hazel, Birch, Alder) it is native to Europe and Asia Minor. A deciduous, medium sized tree 40' to 60' tall with about equal width, somewhat pyramidal in shape.
A long lived tree, it grows best in well-drained soil in full sun, can tolerate urban conditions and pollution.
Hornbeams yield a very hard timber, giving rise to the name “ironwood”, blunting saws quickly. Traditionally the wood was made into ox yokes.Romans used the Hornbeam for their chariots.
Hornbeam tea was said to relieve tiredness and exhaustion, and has been used for the treatment of bronchitis, cough, sore throat, flu, and headache.
