Rye, Secale cereale

Why Lauren loves Rye Gemmo

I love the direct focused action of Rye.  It is a rescue remedy for liver function.

Rye Cereal Grain

Rye is native to central and eastern Turkey and adjacent areas and has an ancient history of cultivation.  There is evidence it was grown as a cereal crop in what is now known as Syria around 13,000 years ago.

Rye prefers light sandy soils and will germinate even in fairly dry soil. It can also grow in heavy clays and poorly drained soils.  It serves as the main bread cereal in most areas east of the France–Germany border and north of Hungary. In Southern Europe, it was cultivated on marginal lands.  A farmers’ saying advises to “Sow wheat in dirt, and rye in dust” alluding to its tolerance for poor conditions.
