The Dog Rose Shrub
The Dog Rose is a bushy and thorny shrub, climbing up to 9 feet (3 meters) high. It is widespread throughout its native regions of Europe, North Africa, Asia, was introduced and naturalized in North America, Australia and New Zealand. It lives and grows in all types of soil, at the edge of woods and forests. It serves as protection at the entrance of forests. Its fruits, rosehips, are very rich in vitamin C. Queen of flowers, roses were already important in ancient times where they were used in rituals, in the making of cosmetics, in perfumery and in the medical field. The Assyrians were the first to discover its virtues. Greeks, Romans and Persians used different species for therapeutic purposes. In 77 AD, Plinius cited 32 ailments that could be treated with remedies based on roses.
