The Blackthorn Shrub
Native to the United Kingdom, Central Europe, and Western Asia, Blackthorn belongs to the Rosaceae family, which includes Dog Rose, Crab Apple, Hawthorn, and Almond. All offer the quality of protection. This tenacious shrub embodies the term protection as it holds its ground in rocky soil, resolutely withstanding the elements. Used for centuries in hedgerows to protect the crops from livestock herds, it also offers a safe habitat for an abundance of wildlife. Yet coupled with its perseverance and role of defender, it produces small, plum-like sloe berries sweetened by the first frost. Look for it along forest margins and openings, on sunny rocky slopes, ravines, river valleys, meadows, and pastures from low elevations to the mountains. It is one of the main scrub species found adjacent to the forest.
