The Black Mulberry Tree
Native to the mountainous regions of southwestern Asia and the Iberian Peninsula, it has been cultivated for so long that its precise natural range is unknown. It has been naturalized west across much of Europe, including Ukraine, and east into China. The Black Mulberry is a deciduous tree growing to 12 m (39 ft) tall by 15 m (49 ft) broad.
For the Romans, it was the wiser of the trees because it waits until all the risks of frost are removed to let its buds blossom. A popular saying states, it is better to be a mulberry tree than an almond tree, meaning caution is better than haste.
